Keratoconus : Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Keratoconus : Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

What is Keratoconus?

The cornea (outer clear layer of the eye) normally has a dome shape, like a ball. When this structure of cornea gets distubed and the cornea bulges out like a cone, the condition is known as keratoconus.

Causes of Keratoconus:

Tiny fibers of protein in the eyes known as collagen helps to maintain the structure of the cornea. When these fibres get weak, they can’t hold their shape and the cornea gets distorted and loses its dome shape and becomes more like a cone shape.

Below can be linked to this condition:

Family history : If someone  in the family has keratoconus, then there are chances of the family member getting this condition increases. Therefore, getting children’s eyes checked is very important.

Some disorders : Studies have shown that there are some disorders that may be the cause of keratoconus like down’s syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, retinitis pigmentosa etc.

Inflammation : Inflammation from things like allergies, asthma, etc, can break down the fibres of the cornea.Rubbing of eyes : Rubbing the eyes harder can break down the fibres in the cornea leading to keratoconus. If a person has keratoconus, then rubbing the eyes can make this condition worse.

Changes to the shape of the cornea makes it very difficult for the eyes to focus without glasses or contact lenses. In many cases, a corneal transplant is needed to restore the eyesight if the condition worsens.

Symptoms of Keratoconus:

Keratoconus changes the vision in below ways:

  • As there is a change in the shape of the cornea, the outer smooth surface becomes wavy due to cone shape. This condition is known as irregular astigmatism.
  • Due to the expansion of the front area of the eye, the vision becomes more nearsightedness. That is, a person can see nearby objects clearly while far away objects become blurred.
  • Sudden clouding of vision.
  • Frequent changes in eye glasses.
  • Increased sensitivity to bright light.

Diagnosis of Keratoconus:

For diagnosis, the doctor needs to measure the shape of the cornea, this is called corneal topography.

Treatment:

Depending on the condition of Keratoconus, your eye doctor can suggest below treatments.

  • Initially new glasses would have to be worn.
  • Contact lenses.
  • Cornea collagen crosslinking (C3R).
  • Cornea transplant.

Preventive measures:

See your eye doctor immediately if your eyesight starts to change.
